Medieval Castle of Vaulx

The Medieval Castle of Vaulx (Château Médiéval de Vaulx, also called “Château César”) is the last remaining medieval castle in the Tournai area, located in the village of Vaulx‑lez‑Tournai (Vaulx), just two kilometres from Tournai in the province of Hainaut, Wallonia, Belgium.

It was built in the 14th century as a fortified seigneurial residence, and its architecture is of the so‑called “Philippe‑Auguste” type (early Gothic military style), with thick walls, defensive features and a central keep, though it is now preserved only as ruins. 

The site includes not only the castle ruins but also adjacent caves and a surrounding area that has been classified as a heritage monument, and it is maintained by a local non‑profit association (ASBL Château Médiéval de Vaulx) which works to protect, restore and popularise the site, since it is not currently a public museum in the usual sense. 

The castle is best known for hosting an annual medieval fair, usually held in August, where visitors can experience a weekend of medieval life with historical camps, minstrels, falconers, archers, artisans selling period crafts, guided visits of the ruins, and other animations that bring the landscape back to the medieval era and make this otherwise little‑known monument a focal point of local cultural tourism.
