The Meroë Pyramids, located near Shendi in River Nile State, Sudan, are among the most remarkable remnants of the ancient Kingdom of Kush.
Built between roughly the 3rd century BC and the 4th century AD, these steep-sided Nubian pyramids served as royal tombs for kings, queens, and nobles of the Kushite civilization, which once ruled a powerful kingdom along the Nile. The site contains hundreds of pyramids, making it one of the largest pyramid complexes in the world.
Although smaller than the famous Egyptian pyramids, they are distinctive for their narrow bases and sharp angles. Set amid the desert landscape, the Meroë Pyramids are part of the Archaeological Sites of the Island of Meroe, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and are widely regarded as one of Sudan’s most important historical and cultural treasures.
