Millennium Park
Abuja, Nigeria
Millennium Park is the largest public park in Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria. It’s located in the Maitama district, close to important government buildings and the Presidential Villa. The park was officially opened in December 2003 by Queen Elizabeth II during her visit to Nigeria. Since then, it has become one of the most popular places for relaxation, family outings, and nature walks in the city.
The park covers about 32 hectares (80 acres) and is beautifully designed with a mix of natural and landscaped areas. It was created by Italian architect Manfredi Nicoletti, who gave it a unique layout. A small river runs through the park, dividing it into two sections. One side is dedicated to untouched nature, with different types of Nigerian vegetation like rainforest, savanna, and mountain plants. There are also greenhouses for butterflies and tropical birds. The other side of the park has a more formal garden style, with paved walkways, fountains, and colorful flower beds2.
One of the most striking features of Millennium Park is its long, straight path made of white Roman travertine stone. This path is lined with fountains and leads visitors through the park’s green spaces. It also connects two important landmarks: the sacred Cotton Tree and Aso Rock, a famous natural rock formation in Abuja. The park’s design includes geometric pools, wave-like flower beds, and shaded areas for resting.
Millennium Park is a favorite spot for families, joggers, photographers, and tourists. It’s perfect for picnics, outdoor games, or just enjoying the fresh air. Entry to the park is free, and it’s open daily from early morning until evening. There are also occasional events and festivals held in the park, especially during national holidays.
