Momotombo Volcano is a prominent stratovolcano located near the city of León in Nicaragua, situated on the shores of Lake Managua.

Its eruption in 1610 was so powerful that it forced the relocation of the then colonial city of León to its current location, leaving the ruins of the old city, León Viejo, preserved as a historic site. The volcano has erupted multiple times since, with notable eruptions in 1886, 1905, and more recently in late 2015 and early 2016. The eruptions typically involve explosive activity with ash plumes, lava flows, and incandescent tephra being ejected.

Momotombo is considered both a symbol of the region and a natural landmark, with its volcanic activity closely monitored due to its impact on the surrounding communities and its significant role in local history.
