The Monastery of Fotodoti, also known as the Fortified Monastery of Christ Photodoti, is one of the oldest and most important monasteries on the island of Naxos.

Located on a hillside near the village of Danakos, it overlooks the Aegean Sea and is surrounded by oak trees, vineyards, and peaceful countryside. The monastery was built on the site of an earlier Christian basilica dating back to the 6th century and was later remodeled during the Byzantine era. Over the centuries, it was expanded, fortified, and influenced by both Orthodox and Latin rulers, giving it the castle-like appearance it retains today. 

Its architecture combines religious and defensive features, including a fortified exterior, a domed church, monks’ cells, courtyards, and historic marble decorations. The monastery also preserves medieval artistic and architectural elements that reflect its long history. Today, the Monastery of Fotodoti is valued as an important religious and cultural monument of Naxos, attracting visitors with its historical significance, distinctive fortress-like design, and beautiful natural setting.
