Monserrate

Bogotá, Colombia

Monserrate is an iconic 3,152-meter (10,341-foot) hill in Bogotá, Colombia, serving as both a major religious pilgrimage site and the city’s most popular tourist attraction. Perched atop the eastern hills overlooking downtown Bogotá, it is crowned by a 17th-century white basilica (completed in 1657) housing the sacred image of El Señor Caído de Monserrate (“The Fallen Lord”), a Christ figure believed by believers to perform miracles. The hill has been sacred since pre-Columbian times when the indigenous Muisca people inhabited the area, and a hermitage dedicated to Nuestra Señora de Monserrate was first built there in 1620. Visitors can reach the summit via a scenic funicular railway, a cable car, or a 1.8-mile steep pedestrian trail that takes about 1 hour 20 minutes to hike, with the trail open daily except Tuesdays from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. for ascent. At the top, pilgrims follow a Way of the Cross path while tourists enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Bogotá’s sprawling skyline, dine at restaurants, and soak in the blend of spirituality, nature, and culture that makes Monserrate the “spiritual heart of Bogotá”.
