Founded in 1255 as one of the first bastides of Gascony, it sits on a rocky promontory overlooking the Auzoue Valley and is officially recognized as one of “The Most Beautiful Villages of France.” The village is known for its well-preserved medieval layout, arcaded central square, half-timbered houses, fortified church, and historic gateways.

Its location on the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela has also contributed to its cultural importance over the centuries. Montréal is surrounded by vineyards that produce Armagnac and Floc de Gascogne, and it is also famous for the nearby Gallo-Roman Villa of Séviac, which contains some of the finest mosaic floors preserved in Europe.
