Montségur is a small mountain village in the Ariège department of southern France, famous for its close association with the Cathars and one of the most significant sites in medieval French history.

Nestled in the foothills of the Pyrenees, it is dominated by the iconic Château de Montségur, which stands atop a rocky peak known as the “Pog” at an altitude of about 1,200 meters. The village is best known as the last major stronghold of the Cathars. After an 11‑month siege, the fortress fell in 1244, marking a pivotal moment in the Albigensian Crusade.

More than 200 Cathars chose death rather than renounce their beliefs, making Montségur a powerful symbol of religious history and resistance. Today, visitors come to explore the castle ruins, learn about Cathar heritage, and enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The site is recognized for its outstanding cultural importance and is part of the UNESCO-listed Royal Capetian Fortresses of Languedoc.
