Moto Moto Museum
Mbala, Northern Province, Zambia
The Moto Moto Museum in Mbala, Northern Province, Zambia, is an ethnographic institution opened in 1974 as the country's second-largest museum, housed in a repurposed carpentry workshop donated by the local diocese and named after Bishop Joseph Dupont, nicknamed "Moto Moto" for his pipe-smoking habit meaning "hot hot" in Swahili.
It preserves artifacts collected since the 1940s by Canadian priest Jean Jacques Corbeil, focusing on Bemba cultural traditions with exhibits on initiation rites, musical instruments, drums, masks, smoking tools, hunter-gatherer life, Bantu economic history, rock art sites, and Zambia's involvement in the slave trade and world wars, including a walk-in initiation hut replica.
Located about 3 kilometers north of Mbala town near historically significant sites like the end of World War I's last shots, it offers a gift shop with local crafts and serves as a key cultural hub despite some dim lighting and access challenges via poor roads.
