Musawwarat es-Sufra, located near Naga in Sudan’s River Nile State, is one of the most important archaeological sites of the ancient Kingdom of Kush.
Dating largely to the Meroitic period between the 3rd century BC and 4th century AD, the site is renowned for its vast Great Enclosure, the Lion Temple of Apedemak, and an extensive system of courtyards, ramps, and ceremonial structures.
Known for its numerous carvings of elephants and its unique architectural design, Musawwarat es-Sufra formed part of a major religious and ceremonial centre and is included within the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Archaeological Sites of the Island of Meroe.
