Museum of Antigua and Barbuda
St. John's, Saint John Parish, Antigua, Antigua and Barbuda
The Museum of Antigua and Barbuda is a small national history museum located in downtown St. John’s, on Long Street in Saint John Parish, Antigua, Antigua and Barbuda. It is housed in the former colonial Court House, a stone building constructed around 1747–1750 that is considered one of the oldest structures still in use in the city, originally serving as both a courthouse and legislative meeting place. The museum was founded in 1985 and presents exhibits on the islands’ geology, indigenous Arawak (Taíno) culture, colonial history, and the transition to independence, including Arawak tools and pottery, sugar‑plantation models, and a replica of an Arawak house. Outside the building, visitors can see a collection of historic sugar‑cane railway locomotives that once operated on Antigua’s plantation‑rail system, while the museum also functions as a research center with a public library and archives, offering a compact yet informative overview of the nation’s past and material culture.
