Myrina Castle is a large medieval fortress overlooking the town of Myrina on the island of Lemnos in the northern Aegean Sea.

Built on a steep rocky peninsula, it occupies the site of an ancient acropolis and contains fortifications that date back to prehistoric and Byzantine times. The castle took its present form through centuries of rebuilding and expansion by Byzantines, Venetians, and Ottomans.

Because of its strong natural defenses and commanding position, it became one of the most important and formidable fortresses in the Aegean, serving as the island’s main defensive and administrative center. Covering about 14.4 hectares, the fortress is one of the largest castles in the Aegean.

Its impressive walls, towers, gates, cisterns, and other remains reflect its long military history and the many civilizations that controlled Lemnos over the centuries. Today, Myrina Castle is one of the island’s most iconic landmarks, offering visitors a fascinating glimpse into Lemnos’s past along with spectacular views of the town, the sea, and the surrounding coastline.
