National Christian Centre
Abuja, Nigeria
The National Christian Centre is a famous church building located in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria. It is also known as the National Ecumenical Centre or the National Church of Nigeria. This centre is not owned by any single church denomination, which means that Christians from different backgrounds can all worship and hold events there.
The idea for the National Christian Centre began in the 1980s. Construction started in 1989, but the work paused for several years because of funding problems. The project was later restarted and completed in 2005. Its dedication took place during Nigeria’s 45th independence anniversary celebrations. The church's completion was ensured by the Christian Association of Nigeria, who brought several Christian groups together for this purpose.
The church was designed by a Nigerian architectural firm in a postmodern neo-Gothic style. It features large pivoted arches and a wide central hall, called the nave. One unique feature is the rotating altar, which completes a full circle every ten minutes. This allows everyone in the congregation to see the altar during a service. There are also beautiful stained glass windows in shades of yellow, green, and red, which decorate the building. A large pipe organ is fitted on one side for musical performances.
Located in the Central Business District of Abuja, the National Christian Centre is opposite the Central Bank of Nigeria. It serves as a major cultural and spiritual centre for Christians in the country. The church has a seating capacity of about 8,000 and is used for major national Christian events, wedding ceremonies, and worship services. Interdenominational worship services are held regularly, and the centre is open to guided tours when not in use for church events.
