The National Museum of Sudan in Khartoum has long been the country’s most important museum and was home to one of the world’s largest collections of Nubian antiquities. Established as the national museum in 1971, it showcased thousands of years of Sudanese history, from prehistoric cultures and the ancient Kingdom of Kush to the Christian and Islamic periods, with artifacts gathered from many of the nation’s most significant archaeological sites. Located near the confluence of the Blue Nile and White Nile, the museum was especially famous for its statues, royal artifacts, temples relocated during the Nubian monument rescue campaigns, and extensive collections from ancient Nubian civilizations. Although the museum suffered severe damage and looting during the conflict that began in 2023, it remains a powerful symbol of Sudan’s rich cultural heritage and archaeological legacy.
