Verified Nesactium

Muntić, Croatia, Croatia

Nesactium, near Muntić in Istria, Croatia, is one of the country’s most important archaeological sites.

It was the main settlement and likely the capital of the ancient Histri people, who lived in the region before the Roman conquest. Archaeological evidence shows that the site was inhabited from prehistoric times through Late Antiquity. In 177 BC, the Romans captured and destroyed the Histrian stronghold after a major siege, then rebuilt it as a Roman town.

Over time, it developed forums, temples, baths, homes, and later Early Christian basilicas, reflecting its importance during both the Roman and early Christian periods. Today, Nesactium is an open archaeological park featuring preserved ruins, ancient walls, and burial sites overlooking Budava Bay. It offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into more than a thousand years of Istrian history and the transition from prehistoric, to Roman, to early Christian civilization.
