New Gate Tower
Portugal, Portugal
The New Gate Tower, known as Torre da Porta Nova or Arco da Porta Nova, is a Baroque-Neoclassical triumphal arch in Braga, Portugal, marking the western entrance to the city's medieval walls.
Originating from King Fernando I's 1373 completion of defensive walls started by Dinis—with an initial tower rebuilt around 1512 by Archbishop Diogo de Sousa—it was transformed in 1772-1773 by André Soares into a decorative gateway featuring pilasters, the Braga coat of arms, and allegorical statues, traditionally used to present city keys to dignitaries.
Nestled amid urban shops near the cathedral, its dual façades blend Rococo exuberance westward with restrained Neoclassicism eastward, standing as a National Monument symbolizing Braga's transition from fortress to ceremonial hub.
