Nieuw Nickerie is the third largest city in Suriname and serves as the capital of the Nickerie district, located on the northwestern coast near the mouth of the Courantyne River.

The city is a key regional hub known for its agricultural importance, particularly rice cultivation, as Nickerie is the largest rice-producing area in Suriname. 

It has a port accessible to small oceangoing vessels and is connected by road and air to Paramaribo, the capital. Nieuw Nickerie features a blend of cultures including Javanese, Hindustani, and Creole communities, and offers local markets, cultural events, and natural attractions such as the nearby Bigi Pan protected wetlands, which are rich in birdlife and wildlife.

The city combines economic activity with access to surrounding natural beauty, making it an important center in western Suriname.
