North Beach, or Praia do Norte, is a famous Atlantic beach in the town of Nazaré on Portugal’s central coast, known worldwide for its giant breaking waves that attract elite big‑wave surfers.

It lies on the north side of the Nazaré headland, below the São Miguel Arcanjo fort, and is shaped by an underwater submarine canyon that amplifies swells into waves sometimes taller than 25–30 meters, several times the height of a typical house.

The beach has a long stretch of golden sand and looks relatively quiet and “wild,” with dunes and natural vegetation, but the sea is extremely dangerous for swimming and even for standing too close to the water’s edge, especially in winter when the big‑wave circus is active.

In summer the surf calms somewhat and more casual visitors come for the dramatic views, photography, and the nearby surf museum, while the beach itself remains unsupervised and better suited to watching professionals than to ordinary sunbathing or bathing.
