NWU Botanical Garden is a small university botanical garden in Potchefstroom, located next to the Potchefstroom campus of North-West University along Calderbank Avenue, and is open to the public free of charge on weekdays. It covers just under 3 hectares yet contains more than 1,500 plant species, with most plantings focused on indigenous flora from the North West Province alongside a few carefully chosen exotics used for teaching and research. A central man-made rocky ridge with a waterfall is surrounded by a natural veld section, while the rest of the garden is arranged into themed areas such as a swamp garden, vlei garden, formal indigenous garden, invader display, evolution garden and succulent rockery. The garden also supports many animals and insects, includes research and cultivation greenhouses, and functions as a living laboratory supplying plant material for university practicals while offering a quiet, compact green refuge for visitors.
