Old Dongola, located in Sudan’s Northern State on the banks of the Nile River, was one of the most important cities of medieval Nubia and served as the capital of the Christian Kingdom of Makuria from around the 6th to the 14th century.

Originally founded as a fortress, it developed into a major political, religious, and commercial center with churches, palaces, monasteries, and royal buildings. Today, Old Dongola is an important archaeological site featuring the ruins of medieval churches, fortifications, residences, and Islamic-era monuments that reflect the city’s long and diverse history.

Its remains provide valuable insight into the culture, trade, and religious life of one of Africa’s most significant medieval kingdoms.
