Old Navarino Fortress
Pylos-Nestor, Greece, Greece
Old Navarino Fortress, also known as Palaiokastro, is a medieval castle overlooking Navarino Bay near Pylos in the Peloponnese.
Built by Frankish rulers in the late 13th century on a naturally defensive hilltop, it was strategically positioned to guard one of Greece’s finest natural harbors. The fortress stands on a site with an even older history, near the location of ancient Pylos and the battlefield of the famous Battle of Pylos during the Peloponnesian War.
Over the centuries, it passed through Frankish, Venetian, and Ottoman control, with each period leaving its mark on the castle’s structure. Today, the castle is admired for its dramatic ruins and spectacular views over Navarino Bay, Voidokilia Beach, and the surrounding coastline. It remains one of the most significant historical landmarks in Messenia, offering visitors a glimpse into both the medieval and ancient past of the region.
