Oud Kasteel Van Vichte
Anzegem, Belgium, Belgium
Oud Kasteel Van Vichte is a historic castle in the village of Vichte, a deelgemeente of Anzegem in West Flanders, Belgium, built originally in the early 12th century as a fortified residence on a motte (an earthen mound surrounded by water) and later developed into a stone castle with a surrounding neerhof (lower courtyard) and an impressive gatehouse.
The castle’s lowest floor, showing clear Romanesque influence, dates from around 1500 when the timber and earth structures were replaced with stone by Maarten de la Faille, and it now functions as a cellar. Over the centuries the site acquired a 15th-century gatehouse with small corner towers, a dovecote tower, a large barn dated to about 1500, and later residential buildings from 1763 and 1859, making it a complex of medieval and post‑medieval elements rather than a single uniform building.
The original noble family, the “van der Vichte,” lived there continuously from the 12th century until 1594; after that the castle was leased and eventually sold in 1917 to Jacques Meyers, and after World War I it passed to the Verhaeghe family, brewers who still inhabit it today.
