Palace of the Prince-Bishops
Liège, Belgium, Belgium
The Palace of the Prince-Bishops in Liège, Belgium, is a grand historic building that served as the residence of the powerful Prince-Bishops, who ruled both spiritually and politically.
The palace stands on Place Saint-Lambert, where the former Cathedral of Saint Lambert once stood, and traces its origins back to around 1000 CE when Bishop Notger first built a fortress integrated into city fortifications. After suffering destruction by fire and siege in the 12th and early 16th centuries, the current palace construction began in 1526 under Bishop Érard de La Marck, showcasing Renaissance architectural style with some Gothic elements. The southern facade was rebuilt in the Louis XIV-Regency style in the 18th century, and a neo-Gothic wing was added in the 19th century.
Today, the palace houses the Palace of Justice of Liège as well as the provincial government. The courtyard is famous for its 60 uniquely decorated columns featuring human figures and grotesque masks, representing Renaissance humanist influences and the discovery of the New World. While the second courtyard is usually closed to the public, the first courtyard with its arcades and elaborate columns can be visited, offering a glimpse into the palace’s historical grandeur and architectural splendor, embodying Liège’s rich political and religious heritage.
