Palomino
La Guajira Department, Colombia
Palomino is a small town located on the Caribbean coast in the La Guajira Department of northern Colombia. It sits close to the border with the Magdalena Department, between the wide blue sea and the green foothills of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, the world’s highest coastal mountain range. Palomino is about 70km from Santa Marta and 90km from Riohacha, making it fairly easy to reach by road from either city.
The town is famous for its beautiful natural scenery. Here, you find tropical beaches with soft sand, clear rivers, thick jungles, and impressive views of distant snow-capped mountains. Visitors often enjoy relaxing on the quiet beach, swimming in the warm sea, and taking float trips down the Palomino River. The river journey, known as tubing, is a favorite adventure for many travelers.
Palomino has a warm, tropical climate all year. The dry season runs from December to May, and the rainy season is from May to November. Temperatures are usually between 27°C and 33°C (81°F–91°F), making it suitable for beach activities almost any time of year.
Most people living in Palomino are involved in small-scale agriculture, growing crops like plantain, yuca, corn, and mango. Some also raise cattle and goats, or make local handcrafts such as hats, baskets, and pottery. Fishing is common, but it is not the main economic activity. In recent years, tourism has grown, bringing new restaurants, hostels, and eco-friendly hotels to the area.
The town is home to a mix of cultures, including mestizo, Afro-Colombian, and indigenous groups. The Kogi and Arhuaco people from the nearby mountains regularly visit Palomino to exchange handmade crafts and perform traditional ceremonies by the sea. Their culture adds a special character to the area.
