Pantocrator Castle
Greece, Greece
Pantocrator Castle is a historic fortress located near Preveza in northwestern Greece, at the entrance to the Ambracian Gulf.
Built in the early 19th century under the rule of Ali Pasha of Ioannina, the castle was strategically positioned to control maritime traffic between the Ionian Sea and the gulf. Named after a nearby Church of Christ Pantocrator, the fortress features high defensive walls, bastions, moats, and a large central courtyard.
It was designed by the French engineer François Pouqueville de Vaudoncourt and formed part of a wider network of fortifications protecting the region. In later years, the castle was also used as a prison. Today, it stands as an important historical monument and cultural venue, offering visitors a glimpse into the military history of Preveza while providing scenic views of the surrounding coast and sea.
