The Parthenon in Athens, located on the Acropolis, is a temple built in the 5th century BCE to honor the goddess Athena, the city's patron.

Constructed between 447 and 438 BCE under the leadership of the statesman Pericles, it represents the high point of classical Greek architecture and design, particularly the Doric order. Designed by architects Ictinus and Callicrates and overseen by the sculptor Phidias, the Parthenon features precise proportions, elegant Doric columns, and rich sculptural decorations including metopes and a frieze depicting mythological and historical scenes.

Originally, the temple housed a massive gold and ivory statue of Athena. The structure symbolizes the power and cultural achievements of Athens following its victory in the Greco-Persian Wars and remains a seminal example of ancient Greek architectural mastery and artistry. It has undergone various transformations over time, including its use as a Christian church and later damage from conflict, yet it remains a dominant cultural and historical monument today.​
