Verified Pejačević Castle

Virovitica, Croatia, Croatia

Pejačević Castle in Virovitica, Croatia, is a late Baroque-Classicist manor built between 1800 and 1804 on the site of a former medieval fortress.

It was constructed by Count Antun Pejačević and later completed by his son Antun II with designs by the Viennese architect N. Roth. The castle was the main residence of the Pejačević noble family, influential landowners in Slavonia whose estate was granted by Empress Maria Theresa in 1750.

Due to financial difficulties, the family sold the castle in 1841 to the German princely family Schaumburg-Lippe, who owned it for about 70 years before it changed hands several times and was finally sold to the town of Virovitica in 1930. Since then, it has served as a town museum showcasing local history and culture.

The castle is characterized by its classical architectural style with three wings arranged around a central hallway, highlighted by a grand hall and dome, and is surrounded by a harmonious park that was developed alongside it. Restoration efforts from 2016 to 2019 revived its original pink facade and interior splendor, making it a cultural and historical landmark in Virovitica.
