Penshurst Botanic Gardens
Penshurst, Victoria, Australia, Australia
Penshurst Botanic Gardens is a 13-acre public reserve in the center of Penshurst, Victoria, Australia, centered around a permanent "never-failing" spring that creates a natural wetland ecosystem with narrow waterways cascading into a lake.
The gardens feature an impressive collection of Australian, American, European, and Asian plants, including Swamp Cypress trees planted along the waterways that will eventually form a canopy over a footbridge, plus magnificent oaks and poplars from the 1920s connecting to the original 1889 Penshurst Public Gardens.
Visitors enjoy a white gazebo on the lake's edge, picnic facilities with BBQ and shaded tables, a playground, swimming pool, toilets, and grassy areas for recreation, all set on land that was traditionally a meeting place for Aboriginal people and formerly used for grazing sheep. Entry is free at Chesswas Street, making it a peaceful wetland garden destination in southwest Victoria's volcanic landscape near Mount Rouse.
