Place de la Bastille is one of Paris’s most famous public squares and marks the site where the Bastille prison once stood before it was stormed during the French Revolution on July 14, 1789.

The prison was later demolished, and the square became a powerful symbol of liberty and revolutionary change in France. At the center of the square stands the July Column, a monument commemorating the July Revolution of 1830. Topped by the gilded “Spirit of Freedom,” the column honors those who died during the uprising and remains one of the area’s most recognizable landmarks.

Today, Place de la Bastille is a lively gathering place surrounded by cafés, restaurants, and cultural attractions, including the Opéra Bastille. It is a popular destination for both visitors and locals, combining historical significance with modern Parisian life.
