Verified Place Gare Viger

Montreal, Canada, Canada

Place Gare Viger in Montreal, Canada, is a historic structure originally built in 1898 as a combined railway station and grand hotel by the Canadian Pacific Railway, designed by architect Bruce Price.

It was inspired by the French Loire Valley châteaux style, featuring pepperbox corner turrets, pronounced conical roofs, and copper elements. Located near Montreal’s financial district and city hall, it served as a major passenger rail terminus and luxury hotel providing convenient access to Viger Square, the city's first public garden. However, as Montreal’s commercial core shifted and the Great Depression hit, the hotel closed in 1935 and the station in 1951.

The building was then converted into office space and renamed Édifice Jacques-Viger, losing much of its original grandeur. Decades of neglect followed, worsened by the construction of a nearby highway that destroyed the original gardens.

Recent redevelopment efforts began in the 2000s to restore and transform the building into a vibrant mixed-use campus with residential, office, and commercial spaces, including the headquarters of Lightspeed, reflecting a successful revival of this once iconic Montreal landmark .
