The site dates back to the 10th century but mainly features ruins from the 13th to 15th centuries. The castle was part of a thriving walled town with its own mint and a prosperous economy. Poilvache was an important military, judicial, and administrative center associated with the County of Luxembourg. It was besieged and largely destroyed in 1430 by forces led by the Prince-Bishop of Liège.

Today, the ruins include walls, towers, a well, and remnants of medieval buildings, set in a natural reserve that also showcases diverse flora. Visitors can explore the site through well-marked trails with informational signs and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding valley and river. The area is peaceful and popular for historical walks and picnics, with limited facilities like a small bar at the site. Poilvache remains a significant cultural heritage site in Wallonia.
