Polvoeira Beach
Portugal, Portugal
Polvoeira Beach is a stunning coastal beach located in Pataias, Alcobaça, on Portugal's Silver Coast, known for its extensive stretch of sand forming a beautiful bay shape surrounded by tree-covered cliffs and shrub-topped headlands.
The beach features calmer waters than surrounding beaches, making swimming safer and more enjoyable, and the area boasts remarkable biodiversity with a notable abundance of octopuses (polvo in Portuguese, which gives the beach its name) in the rocky seabed at the northern end.
This tourist beach offers good infrastructure including lifeguard surveillance during bathing season (June 28 to August 31), a bar, restaurant, toilets, showers, and ample outdoor parking accessible via a forest road running parallel to the coast. The beach is ideal for water sports like surfing, bodyboarding, and sport fishing, as well as beach volleyball and football, and it holds the Gold Quality distinction for 2025 and Zero Pollution certification.
While some steps leading to the beach are in poor condition, making access somewhat challenging, the natural unspoiled beauty, tranquil atmosphere, and spacious open area make it especially popular for leisurely walks and dog owners outside the bathing season. The average seawater temperature in summer is 16-18°C, and visitors can enjoy spectacular views of the coastline stretching southward from the parking area on clear days.
