Pont du Gard
Gard, Occitanie, France
The Pont du Gard is an ancient Roman aqueduct bridge built in the 1st century AD to carry water over 50 kilometers to the Roman colony of Nemausus (modern-day Nîmes) in southern France.
It is one of the best-preserved Roman aqueducts and a remarkable feat of engineering, rising nearly 49 meters high with three tiers of arches to cross the Gardon River. Its construction is attributed to Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa around 19 BC, and it took about 15 years to complete using around 30 million limestone blocks without mortar.
The aqueduct supplied Nîmes with about 40,000 cubic meters of water daily for around 300 years, contributing to the city's growth and prosperity. After the Roman Empire's decline, the Pont du Gard remained largely intact because it also functioned as a toll bridge, helping preserve it through continued maintenance.
Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of southern France's most visited historical landmarks, admired for its architectural grandeur and historical significance.
