Porta e Torre de Almedina
Coimbra, Portugal, Portugal
Porta e Torre de Almedina is a 12th-century medieval gate and tower in Coimbra, central Portugal, serving as the main entrance to the upper walled city after its conquest from the Moors.
Originally part of Arab leader Al-Mansur's 11th-century fortifications limiting access to three gates, it features a vaulted arch tunnel designed as a defensive choke point, with the tower housing a former chapel to Our Lady of Conception, a council bell until 1870, and now the Municipal Historical Archives since 1988.
Embellished in the 16th century with Manueline details and flanked by the Gothic Arco de Barbacã, it leads via steep Rua Quebra Costas to the old cathedral, offering panoramic city views as a preserved symbol of Coimbra's layered past.
