Portobelo, located in Panama’s Colón Province, is a historic coastal town founded by the Spanish in 1597 to serve as a major port for the shipment of gold and silver from South America to Spain.

Its strategic importance made it a target for pirate attacks, leading to the construction of imposing forts such as San Lorenzo, San Jerónimo, and Santiago de la Gloria, which remain well-preserved and are now part of a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The town is also famous for its Church of San Felipe, home to the revered statue of the Black Christ, which attracts thousands of pilgrims annually during a major religious festival in October. Portobelo celebrates a rich Afro-Panamanian heritage visible in its culture, music, and arts, influenced by the enslaved Africans brought to the region during colonial times.

Beyond its historical and cultural significance, Portobelo offers beautiful beaches, lush tropical forests, and excellent snorkeling and diving opportunities in its national park, making it a blend of natural beauty and vibrant tradition.
