Praia da Aguda
Portugal, Portugal
Praia da Aguda is a small traditional fishing village and glorious sandy beach about 13 km south of Porto in Arcozelo, a parish of Vila Nova de Gaia in the Porto District, Portugal, known for its wide golden-sand stretch that runs from Miramar in the north to Granja in the south and for its calm, low-key atmosphere untouched by mass tourism.
The beach is a FEE Blue Flag and EEC Blue Flag ocean beach with an extensive sandy areal, protected by a small harbor and sea wall where a local fishing fleet moors boats on the sand, and it has a dune system in its northern part within the Parque de Dunas da Aguda. Aguda’s waters are rich in marine life and are appreciated for therapeutics due to high iodine content, drawing surfers for strong Atlantic waves and underwater fishing enthusiasts for the rocky seabed, while at low tide a large pool forms that children enjoy.
The village behind the beach retains distinctly Portuguese character with fishermen’s houses, cafes, and elegant holiday homes, and it is easily accessible by public transport via the Porto-Aveiro railway (Aguda train station is less than 300 m from the beach), making it a popular, accessible day-trip from Porto with very limited car parking.
Summer seawater temperatures are cool, around 16–18°C, and the beach is exposed to powerful Atlantic waves and currents, so swimmers should stay in safe areas, and visitors should be aware of rock outcrops along the water’s edge.
