Praia da Calheta Beach
Calheta, Portugal, Portugal
Praia da Calheta is a small, man‑made sandy beach on the southwest coast of Madeira, in the town of Calheta, and it is one of the few proper golden‑sand beaches on the island.
The sand was imported from North Africa, giving it a rare soft, yellow stretch that contrasts with Madeira’s usual volcanic pebble shores, and it is protected by artificial barriers and breakwaters that make the water noticeably calmer and safer for swimming. The beach is about 100 metres long, has sun loungers, parasols, toilets, showers, and a small bar area, and it lies close to Calheta’s marina and promenade, making it a convenient spot for both tourists and locals.
Because of the calm, sheltered coves created by the dykes, it works well for families and casual swimmers, and it is also accessible for people with reduced mobility, with adapted facilities and reserved parking nearby.
