Praia da Mareta is the largest and most popular beach in Sagres, located at the southwesternmost tip of Portugal’s Algarve region, just below the historic village of Sagres near Cape St. Vincent.

This Blue Flag urban beach stretches over 700 to 800 meters of golden sand in a curved, sheltered bay that protects it from strong winds and big waves for most of the year, making the water relatively calm and ideal for families with children. The beach is framed by high limestone cliffs covered in Mediterranean vegetation, with the impressive 15th-century Sagres Fortress visible on the western side overlooking the shore.

A unique feature is the Pedra do Sal (salt rock), a fossilized coral reef near the beach entrance where Jurassic trace fossils called zoophycos can be seen on the surrounding rocks. Praia da Mareta is easily accessible on foot from anywhere in Sagres village, has lifeguards during bathing season, bathrooms, parasol rentals, and several restaurants nearby, though it’s not accessible for those with mobility issues.

While it’s the most popular beach in Sagres and great for beginners learning to surf in autumn and winter when waves are bigger, it becomes quieter toward the eastern end and is often deserted outside summer months. At low tide, swimmers can sometimes reach a small hidden stretch of sand called Prainha das Poças around the western cliff, and on calm days visitors can kayak, windsurf, or dive to explore the bay’s underwater caves.
