Praia da Rocha (meaning “Rock Beach”) is one of the Algarve’s most famous and iconic beaches, located in the coastal resort town of Portimão in southern Portugal, featuring over a kilometre of wide golden sand sheltered by dramatic warm-coloured sandstone cliffs.

It’s the widest beach in the Algarve at about 200 meters across, so even in peak summer you can usually find space, and its calm, shallow turquoise waters make it family-friendly and safe for children. The 17th-century Fort of Santa Catarina stands on the eastern edge of the beach, originally built to defend the Arade River mouth and now a popular tourist attraction with panoramic coastal viewpoints.

Wide wooden walkways run along the sand, lined with bars, restaurants, and beach sports areas, while the lively seafront promenade (Avenida Tomás Cabreira) extends to Portimão Marina and offers countless hotels, cafés, Irish pubs, cocktail lounges, discos, and the Casino da Rocha with gaming, dining, and dinner shows.
