Praia de Vale Furado
Portugal, Portugal
Praia de Vale Furado is a small, secluded oceanic beach in Pataias, Leiria District, on Portugal’s Silver Coast (Costa de Prata), nestled between Nazaré and São Pedro de Moel and known for its stunning sandstone cliffs in shades of yellow and red, fine clear sand, and a freshwater waterfall that flows into the sea, creating a rare mix of river and ocean waters.
The beach is embraced by high cliffs that shelter it from wind, making it an excellent spot on windy days and for sport fishing, and it is considered one of the best-kept secrets of the west coast, appreciated by nature lovers and travelers seeking peace, silence, and unspoiled beauty.
Access is via small, poorly marked country roads through the vast Pinhal de Leiria pine forest, requiring a short walk down the cliff to the beach via two routes—one easier on the right, the other steeper and twisting beside the stream that ends in a small waterfall—and the parking area at the top also serves as a belvedere with breathtaking views of the coastline and cliffs.
The beach has minimal infrastructure—no lifeguard in the main season, a simple bar at the top of the cliff, and outdoor parking—but offers exceptional natural quality, green flag status, crystal-clear fresh and salt water, and clean, well-cared-for sand, and local legend says you can take weddings there with brides in full gowns and guests playing cards between dishes of the banquet. It also has significant geological heritage: the Feligueira Grande formation here yielded fossils of the extinct mesoeucrocodylian Iberosuchus, a tapir, and other crocodiles, chelonians, and small mammals, adding scientific interest to its natural beauty.
