Praia do Barranco (Este)
Portugal, Portugal
Praia do Barranco (Este), also called East Barranco Beach, is a small, hidden cove in Porches near Lagoa on Portugal’s Algarve coast, tucked into a low cliff nook where the sand is completely replaced by pebbles and greenish stones instead of a sandy shore.
In contrast to the nearby Praia do Barranco farther west near Sagres—which is a 200-meter sandy, naturist-friendly bay in a sheltered valley with limestone cliffs and dunes—this eastern version is a rocky, pebble beach with no sand at all. The western Praia do Barranco is considered one of the Algarve’s secrets due to its remote location reached via a 4-kilometer unpaved dirt road from Raposeira, has no facilities or lifeguards, and is popular with naturists, campers, dog owners, and divers who appreciate its crystal-clear water, diverse marine life among scattered seabed rocks, and calm summer conditions.
The beach sits within the protected Natural Park of Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina, at the mouth of two valleys (which gives it the name “barranco,” meaning ravine), and invites peaceful cliff walks, though it can still be windy despite shelter from surrounding hills and green valleys.
