Verified Praia do Castelo do Queijo

Porto, Portugal, Portugal

Praia do Castelo do Queijo is a small urban beach in Porto, Portugal, located in the Nevogilde neighborhood near the mouth of the Douro River along Avenida Dom Carlos I.

Its unusual name comes from the nearby Forte de São Francisco Xavier do Queijo, a 15th-century defensive fortification popularly called "Castelo do Queijo" (Cheese Castle) because it was built on a large, rounded granite rock that resembled a wheel of cheese. The beach is characterized by its limited sandy area surrounded by prominent rocky outcrops that frame the shoreline, creating a distinctive landscape where visitors walk among the rocks.

It's the last beach in Porto before you reach Matosinhos's more popular sandy beaches, making it a quieter, more local spot. The beach offers good accessibility with public transportation (multiple STCP bus lines), outdoor parking, a bar, and sports facilities including volleyball, football, and handball areas.

While it has Atlantic Ocean waters with summer temperatures around 16°C, the rocky nature means it's less ideal for swimming than sandy beaches, but it offers spectacular ocean views and a unique blend of history and coastal relaxation.
