Praia do Túnel (Praia do Peneco)
Albufeira, Portugal, Portugal
Praia do Túnel, also known as Praia do Peneco, is a central city beach in Albufeira on the southern Algarve coast of Portugal.
It gets its name from a 20‑meter‑long tunnel carved through the cliffs that connects the town’s old quarter to the wide stretch of golden sand below. The beach is popular and usually busy in summer, but it is long enough that most visitors can still find a reasonably quiet spot, and it is fully equipped with lifeguards, sunbeds, umbrellas, and easy access for disabled visitors via elevators and ramps.
At the western end a promenade leads to the Xorino Grotto, a small cave with a local legend about Moorish refugees, while the beach itself is part of Albufeira’s Blue Flag coastline, offering generally good water quality and waves that can be calm for swimming or stronger on some days.
