Praia fluvial de Palheiros e Zorro
Portugal, Portugal
Praia fluvial de Palheiros e Zorro, sometimes called “Torres do Mondego river beach,” is a popular river beach in the parish of Torres do Mondego, Coimbra, Portugal, established in 1997 on the banks of the Rio Mondego with bright white sand and excellent water quality.
Located about 9–15 km from Coimbra city center, it sits in a scenic landscape dominated by the Coimbra marginal massif and surrounded by preserved villages, offering sunlight, calm evenings, and a chance to spot wildlife such as otters and fish eagles. The beach has comprehensive facilities including a bar (serving local snacks like snails), picnic area, grills, restrooms with showers, lifeguard service during the bathing season (July–September), ramps for accessibility, and parking, and it is certified with excellent water quality and monitored bathing safety.
Visitors can swim, kayak, canoe, fish, play beach volleyball, walk, or mountain bike, and the site hosts free concerts and open-air cinema as part of the “Roque no Rio” festival on the first weekend of each month in the bathing season. Main access is via the village of Palheiros on the river’s left bank, with an alternative entry from the right bank across a pedestrian bridge, and it is one of the most visited river beaches in the Coimbra region, especially during summer weekends.
