Praia Osso da Baleia
Portugal, Portugal
Praia do Osso da Baleia is a vast, quiet Atlantic beach in the Carriço parish, near Pombal on Portugal’s Silver Coast, set within the protected Mata Nacional do Urso pine forest and surrounded by dunes and pinewood.
Its name comes from a whale skeleton that washed ashore on the sand in the 20th century, and the beach is celebrated for its exceptional ecological, geological, floristic, faunistic, and landscape values, earning the “Praia Dourada” (Golden Beach) designation since 1998.
The beach has won the EEC Blue Flag every year since 2004 and added the Praia Acessível (Accessible Beach) award in 2005, offering full facilities for people with reduced mobility, including ramps and accessible restrooms, as well as outdoor parking, showers, a bar, and lifeguard surveillance during the bathing season.
It stretches over a long horizon along the protected area, keeps a peaceful, uncrowded atmosphere, and is ideal for surfing, bodyboarding, and long walks on fine, clean sand, with average summer seawater temperatures around 16–18°C.
