Praia Vasco da Gama
Sines, Portugal, Portugal
Praia Vasco da Gama is a charming urban beach located within the city limits of Sines on Portugal's Alentejo coast, integrated into the city's urban fabric and positioned adjacent to the Fishing Port in a sheltered bay with practically no waves.
The beach stretches 360–750 meters along the shoreline and is protected by two breakwaters (molhes), making the water very calm and ideal for windsurfing, sailing, swimming, and other water activities, with an average summer seawater temperature of 17–19°C. Flanked by the bustling Avenida Marginal coastal road, which is very popular for walking and jogging, the beach is surrounded by bars, terraces, and esplanadas, creating a lively ambience that hosts sporting events and concerts both day and night.
The beach is historically significant as a witness to major events in Sines' history, including attacks by corsairs and the embarkation of Dom Miguel for exile, and features a statue of the famous Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama overlooking the beach, who was born in Sines. It offers comprehensive facilities including showers, foot-washing stations, restrooms (including accessible facilities for people with reduced mobility), outdoor parking, a beach bar and restaurant, windsurfing equipment rental, and small craft rental, and is accessible for people with disabilities.
