Preacher’s Cave
North Eleuthera Island, Bahamas
Preacher’s Cave on North Eleuthera Island in the Bahamas is a place where history, nature, and legend converge in quiet reverence. Discovered in the 1600s by Captain William Sayles and a group of English Puritans known as the Eleutheran Adventurers, the cave became their sanctuary after being shipwrecked on the treacherous Devil’s Backbone reef.
Seeking religious freedom, they found refuge in this cavernous shelter and held the island’s first Christian services beneath its limestone ceiling, carving an altar from a boulder that still stands today. The cave itself is spacious and cathedral-like, with natural skylights formed by holes in the roof that filter sunlight onto the stone floor.
These openings, created by centuries of erosion and sea action, lend the cave an ethereal quality that echoes its spiritual past. Though the larger of the two ships was lost in the wreck, only one life was claimed, and the survivors endured harsh conditions, subsisting on wild fruits and fish while mourning the death of their parson, Patrick Copeland.
