Pretoria National Botanical Gardens
Pretoria, South Africa, South Africa
Pretoria National Botanical Garden is a 76‑hectare national botanical garden in the eastern suburbs of Pretoria, centred on a rocky ridge and designed as an urban oasis showcasing South Africa’s indigenous flora. Established in 1946 and fully opened to the public in 1984, it now also houses the headquarters of the South African National Biodiversity Institute and the country’s largest national herbarium, making it an important centre for plant research and conservation. The garden brings together thousands of plant species from different South African regions in themed sections such as a wetland, cycad garden, succulent garden, medicinal and “useful plants” gardens, all arranged around lawns, a dam, and a popular man‑made waterfall that provide habitat for abundant birds, small mammals, and butterflies. Open daily with cashless entry and picnic and braai areas, it serves both as a peaceful recreational space for locals and visitors and as an outdoor classroom through guided tours and environmental education programmes.
