Queens Gardens
Townsville, Australia
Queens Gardens in Townsville, Australia, is a heritage-listed botanical garden established in 1870 as the Botanical Gardens Reserve and originally covered 40 hectares, but now occupies about 4 hectares. It was created to trial exotic plants like cocoa, African oil palms, and mangoes for economic and ornamental purposes during colonial times. Some of the original plantings, including hoop pines and black bean trees, still thrive and are among Australia's oldest cultivated specimens.
The gardens are set against the backdrop of Castle Hill's granite cliffs and feature ornamental flower beds, mazes, an aviary with native birds, and recreational spaces such as picnic areas and playgrounds.
Over the years, the gardens evolved from an acclimatisation site into a popular community space valued for its lush greenery, aesthetic beauty, and role in education and conservation. It also served temporarily as a military base during World War II and was redesigned in the 1950s to enhance its function as a public park.
