Rio Fortress
Greece, Greece
Rio Fortress, also known as Rio Castle or the Castle of the Morea, is a historic coastal fortress located at the entrance to the Gulf of Corinth near Patras in western Greece.
It was built by the Ottoman Sultan Bayezid II in 1499 to control the strategic narrow passage between Rio and Antirrio and to protect the region from naval attacks. Together with the fortress at Antirrio on the opposite shore, it guarded one of Greece’s most important maritime routes and became known as the “Little Dardanelles.”
Over the centuries, it was contested by Ottomans, Venetians, Genoese, and other powers, with the Venetians extensively rebuilding and strengthening it in the late 17th century. Today, the fortress is one of the most significant monuments in the area. Surrounded by a seawater moat and located beside the modern Rio–Antirrio Bridge, it serves as a cultural venue and tourist attraction, offering visitors a glimpse into the region’s rich military and maritime history.
